We are proud to add a constant sum question type. Before you ask “constant what?”, let me give a few examples about where this is useful.
The constant sum question type allows you to ask questions of the form “How much of the budget should we spend on the following five items? (answers should sum to $100)”. If your survey focuses on planning, allocating resources, or allocating time, you will appreciate this question.
You can use the constant sum to see how people spend their time. Using constant sum, you can ask a question about people spend their day at various activities. Depending on your needs, you may ask the participants to sum their answers to 24 hours, or 100%.
Further, you can ask people to allocate money, project time, land, or any other resource. This allows you to gauge the importance of budget items or project items by the amount of resources allocated to it. This information, which is complementary to rating scales, provides an additional way to make decisions based on empirical data.
