Constant Sum Question Type

We are proud to add a constant sum question type. Before you ask “constant what?”, let me give a few examples about where this is useful.

The constant sum question type allows you to ask questions of the form “How much of the budget should we spend on the following five items? (answers should sum to $100)”. If your survey focuses on planning, allocating resources, or allocating time, you will appreciate this question.

You can use the constant sum to see how people spend their time. Using constant sum, you can ask a question about people spend their day at various activities. Depending on your needs, you may ask the participants to sum their answers to 24 hours, or 100%.

Further, you can ask people to allocate money, project time, land, or any other resource. This allows you to gauge the importance of budget items or project items by the amount of resources allocated to it. This information, which is complementary to rating scales, provides an additional way to make decisions based on empirical data.

Several of you had requested a constant sum question type, or had described a problem that is solved by the constant sum question type. We are happy to hear from our customers! We enjoy making SurveyShare a versatile and easy to use survey tool. If you feel that we’re missing something, or have a problem that we can’t solve, let us know. SurveyShare updates and changes

We’re back from the Ohio Education and Technology conference where we met lots of teachers, administrators, and IT professional in schools. Thank you to all who showed up despite the snow and freezing rain!

One thing you’ll notice is the new simplified footer. We’ve replaced the many links that few people clicked on few the most important links the people do use. We also added a few icons for ease of visual reference.

At the same time we are also busy integrating with Salesforce. We have heard the requests from many of our business users and we want to offer you the ability to easily send to your Salesforce contacts. This will soon be possible from within SurveyShare.

In addition SurveyShare is getting a toll-free 800 number! We will start offering phone customer support from noon-5pm Eastern Standard Time Monday through Friday for our Pro Unlimited customers. This change will take place starting on Monday February 21st. We want to hear from you guys!

Many of the changes we make come from suggestions made by you guys. I’m continually surprised and pleased with how SurveyShare is used. To all those who have made suggestions, I thank you! Some of the changes we’ve made in the past and changes we are currently making – phone support – included were either suggested by or arose from customer support requests. So please, if there’s anything we can do, we’re here to help!

Survey Fonts

You can change the font for your survey!

We have made two important changes to the survey design over the weekend.

The first revolves around the confusing settings pages. On the survey design page there was a link to the survey settings. On the publish page, there was also a link to the publish settings. Two different settings pages, you ask? We agree, this doesn’t make much sense.

We changed the name (and icon) of the survey settings to design options, as that’s what this page is really all about. We hope this clarifies a point of confusion.

To the newly renamed design options, we added a font selection! You may now select one of 12 web friendly fonts for your survey. You may always change the font for each question individually. However, the font selection in the design options allows you an easy way to change the font across the entire survey. We picked several fonts representing different styles that tend to work well across all browsers and all operating systems. We hope you enjoy them!

If you find something confusing in SurveyShare, do contact us! We love to hear from our users and if you think something is confusing, chances are someone else does too. We keep working to provide the easiest, most powerful survey tool around.

Clearing results and downloading data

We’ve been hard at work since the upgrade making sure everything is in place and adding a few new options for your use!

First, we’re happy to announce that you can clear results from a survey. This is one of the most requested features and we’re happy to release it. This feature comes in use when clearing out test data from your survey, running another set of results, or wiping results after a survey for confidentiality purposes.

Second, we made a small update to the response info screen. You can view the response info screen when you analyze the results for a given survey. The link is near the top. To the response info, we added the ability to randomize the response e-mails when conducting a public or private survey. Both public and private survey types require a valid email address before participating in the survey. This becomes useful when you’re using a survey to take a poll or vote. Determining who has voted is important, but connecting the individual votes to their voters would violate the anonymity of their vote.

Third, the download-able results have been improved. We added a “Use numeric answers” option. When you use numeric answers, we’ll replace the data in your downloaded file with a number to help with statistical data analysis. The first answer is a question has numeric value “1″, the second answer has value “2″, and so forth. We have also made improvements to this section to aid people downloading large data results – 1000 or more responses.

Also, we’re happy to announce SurveyShare will be attending the Ohio Education and Technology conference in Columbus, Ohio from January 31st – February 2nd. If you’re in the area stop by and see us!

SurveyShare has upgraded!

SurveyShare has now upgraded!

We are pleased to offer one version of SurveyShare instead of two versions side by side as we have been for 3 months. We have conducted several tests, however should you find anything amiss, do let us know.

We continue to improve and make changes, so stay tuned! I’ll leave you with a quote that made me smile and reminds me to consider the human respondent and not just the data produced:

Everyone takes surveys. Whoever makes a statement about human behavior has engaged in a survey of some sort - Andrew Greeley

SurveyShare Pre Upgrade Checklist

We’re preparing for the SurveyShare upgrade tonight and everything is in order! We’ve made several lists and checked them twice. Everyone’s accounts will be migrated to the new version with all surveys and responses intact.

We’re pleased to offer many new features. These features include response filters, additional date and demographic question types, integration with Twitter and Facebook, and improved UI and graphics all around. Some of these have been a long time coming and some of these (Facebook and Twitter) are on the cutting edge of online surveys. In both cases we’re proud to continue to improve SurveyShare for everyone.

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! We’ll be checking in post migration to let everyone know how it went. We’re also adding more features in the near future, including clearing responses and integration with SalesForce. There may be one or two more surprises in store as well. If you have suggestions do let us know! Feel free to contact us at support@surveyshare.com.

Printable PDF Surveys

We are happy to announce the launch of PDF surveys!

We realize that online surveys are not the only surveys around. Pencil and paper surveys are still valuable and offer another parallel method to gather data.

Printable PDF surveys have many uses, even among technology savvy folks. For example, a conference organizer may desire feedback about the conference or a particular session while that information is still fresh within the participants mind. Settings up several computers for participants to enter their responses may be impractical. A printed PDF survey comes to the rescue as an easy alternative to quickly fill in and drop off.

Once you have collected several responses you can still use the power of SurveyShare’s analysis. You may enter the data collected through pencil and paper back into SurveyShare by using your own response link. Once the data is in our system, you may use the powerful analysis tools that you use to analyze data collected online.

If you’d like to create a PDF survey right now, go for it! Start by Logging in or Registering. Once you create your survey, you’ll find a PDF link at the top of the design screen and in the publish section.

The PDF surveys and the SurveyShare surveys match as closely as possible, although there are a few differences. The drop down boxes are problem in the “Pulldown” type question. Although these work well in a browser where you can click to open the options, this is somewhat problematic with paper. Where possible we have converted these question into select one of many or fill in the blank with the options explicitly listed.

Overall we are very pleased to offer PDF surveys to our users. We are still working on tweaking the algorithm and will continue to improve the layout and look of the PDF surveys. If you have suggestions or questions about PDF surveys, please ask away at support@surveyshare.com.

SurveyShare has a blog!

Welcome to the SurveyShare Blog!

SurveyShare’s goal is to provide you with an easy tool to create your own surveys, collect results, and analyze those results. Since we continually work to improve SurveyShare, we would like to keep all our users up to date about what we’re doing here. This blog is a large piece of that. We’ll be periodically making announcements about new features, sharing our thoughts, and providing tips and other useful information.

Yes, we are a small and growing company! Often this means we can move more quickly than other survey tools. Our small size also means we can offer you unique pricing, personal responses, and an agility unmatched with other online survey tools. If something’s wrong, we fix it. If something needs improved, we improve it. If you have blessings or blame, take a moment to share it with us. If you took the time to send us a comment we read it and act upon it.

Yes, we offer support! The best way to reach us currently is through email at support@surveyshare.com. We also plan to offer phone support during business hours soon. You’ll hear more about that later through this blog. Stay tuned.

A little over a month ago, we launched a new version of SurveyShare. The response to this has been great and many people are successfully using the new version of SurveyShare. If you have not yet seen the new version, please check it out!

We are currently running the new version concurrently to the old version due to the large number of changes. We added many features and also updated the look and feel of the site, which had become quite dated (the last face-lift to the site was performed sometime in 2003). Due to the number of changes, we’re giving everyone a chance to migrate at their own pace. Migration is optional through January 5th, 2011, at which point we will migrate everyone over to the new system. We think the new version is really great, but we may be a bit biased. Please feel free to read more about migration.

We want your feedback! SurveyShare is continually changing and evolving. We want to offer you the best survey tool possible. We are still adding features and we try to add the features that we think will have the largest impact. Ultimately, if these features do not serve you well, how well we think of those features does not matter. Our very best feedback and suggestions comes from you guys. If there is a way to improve SurveyShare for you, please let us know!

I’ll leave with one of my favorite quotes from Don Williams Jr, enjoy!

The road of life twists and turns and no two directions are ever the same. Yet our lessons come from the journey, not the destination.
