Skip Patterns

Skip patterns are the sequence of questions asked and skipped. For instance, if a respondent answers a question that indicates she does not own a car, you can opt to "skip" items regarding what kind of car she owns. To implement a skip pattern, you must deploy a multi-page survey. You cannot implement a skip pattern within a single screen.

Not every type of question can be used as the starting point for a skip pattern. Only questions that force the respondent to select a single answer (choose one of several, pulldown menu, radio button) may have a skip pattern. You do not have to use skip patterns to conduct a successful survey.

Detailed example of a SurveyShare skip pattern:

In this pattern of questions, if someone answers "No" to question 1, then it is not necessary for them to answer question 2 and question 3.

1) Do you own a car?
Yes
No
2) What type of car do you drive?
3) Is this the first car you have owned?
4) Do you own a home?

If you wanted respondents who do not own cars to 'skip' from question 1 to question 4, you could create a skip pattern which started at question 1. If the respondent answered "No," they would skip over question 2 and question 3 and go on to question 4.

How is this done in SurveyShare? This is how these questions look in the survey edit screen:

Add a new question after the end of this page

1) Do you own a car?
Yes
No

2) What type of car do you drive?

3) Do you own a home?

4) Is this the first car you have owned?

Notice there are Skip pattern not available icons to the left of each survey question. Since this is still a single page survey, you cannot implement a skip pattern yet. So you should create Page 2 by adding a page break to the question that follows that "branching" question. In this instance, you would add a page break by clicking on the "Add a Page Break" button next to question 2. Then, you need to create a Page 3, which is where the branching or skip pattern ends. In this example, you would click on the "Add a Page Break" button next to question 4. This would create a three page survey that looks like this in the survey edit screen:

Add a new question after the end of this page

1) Do you own a car?
Yes
No

Add a new question at the end of this page

2) What type of car do you drive?

3) Do you own a home?

Add a new question at the end of this page

4) Is this the first car you have owned?

Notice how the Add skip pattern icon Add skip pattern icon is now displayed to the left of question 1 on the first page of the survey? This indicates that you can create a skip pattern that starts from question 1 by clicking the Add skip pattern button. You'll see a simple interface to control the branching pattern:

1) Do you own a car?

Answer   Skips To
yes skips to
no skips to
Choose "Page 2" as the option for "Skip to" for the first possible response and "Page 3" as the "Skip To" option for the second response. When you click the green 'Add' button, the skip pattern will be complete. Respondents who indicate that they do not own cars will 'skip' over the questions on page 2.

The question that serves at the starting point for a skip pattern does not have to be the last question on the page. You should only include one skip pattern per survey page. If you try to include multiple questions with skip patterns on a single survey page, SurveyShare will only execute the logic of the first skip pattern it finds on the page.
